WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 -- U.S. Newswire -- In a letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Senate Leader Bill Frist and Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, Senate Leader Harry Reid, and House Leader Nancy Pelosi urged Republicans to join Democrats to ensure fair and impartial elections, avoid systematic attempts to challenge voters based on race, provide equitable distribution of voting machines and ballots, protect voting rights for people with disabilities and prohibit the distribution of false information about voting locations and regulations.
Democrats are committed to ensuring that ever voter can vote and have that vote counted. The DNC through its Voting Rights Institute and National Lawyers Council has been laying the ground work for more than a year to expand Democrats' national voter protection efforts. These efforts include a national voter protection hotline, 1-888-DEM-VOTE, placement of election protection staff in 12 key states, and a comprehensive series of efforts aimed at helping Americans register to vote, learn how and where to cast their ballot, and provide assistance in overcoming Republican-led efforts to suppress voter turnout for the November elections.
